19th Edition of DRC Mining Week Focused on Sustainable Practices and Local Transformation
The 19th edition of the DRC Mining Week commenced on Wednesday, June 12, in Lubumbashi, under the theme “Prioritizing Sustainable Mining Operations and Local Transformation in the DRC.”
This significant event brought together government officials and industry leaders to discuss and strategize the future of mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over three days.
Organizers aimed to position the DRC as the premier mining destination. “This edition aimed to strengthen the position of the DRC as a leading mining destination.
During these three days, we also focused on how to attract investments in the energy sector, which faces many challenges hindering mining in the DRC,” stated Professor Matamba Jibikilayi, coordinator of the Technical Coordination and Mining Planning Unit.
The event held critical importance as the mining industry grappled with numerous challenges, including local transformation and the energy deficit.
A major concern was how participants could contribute through discussions and debates to reduce the energy deficit, supporting local transformation through sustainable practices to achieve economic growth aligned with the policy and vision of the Mining Code.
To address the energy problem, participants considered solutions such as constructing microelectric dams on waterways before completing the major Inga 3 power station project. Organizers highlighted that the event also allowed stakeholders to explore ways to diversify the Congolese economy.
The event, which concluded on Friday, June 14, featured fruitful exchanges and exhibitions, providing mining operators an opportunity to showcase their contributions to advancing the Congolese economy.
